SAN DIEGO, CA — The University of San Diego paused its men's basketball season for the second time due to a "COVID-19 related concern." USD canceled Monday's nonconference game at Arizona, according to a statement on its website.
Previously USD announced on Nov. 20 that the program would pause all team activities for 14 days as a result of a positive COVID-19 test result within the program. The test result pushed the season's start date from Nov. 25 to Dec. 9.
The Toreros are 1-3, including an 85-53 nonconference loss at UC Irvine Saturday.
The news comes amid a statewide spike in coronavirus cases, overwhelming intensive care units in Southern California. The county's hospitals have 16 percent of their ICU beds available, unchanged since Tuesday, which is at odds with the state estimate that the Southern California region's ICU beds are entirely full.
