JOHNSTON, RI — A Johnston chiropractor who admitted to spending more than $1 million he hid from the Internal Revenue Service on things such as Whole Foods orders, strip clubs and drugs was sentenced to three years probation for tax evasion.
Dr. Leonard Marino, 51, pleaded guilty in federal court to cashing patients' insurance checks and diverting the money for his personal use. the U.S. Attorney's office said the first year of Marino's sentence is to be served in home confinement and that he was fined $75,000.
Marino, president of Chiropractic Associates in Providence, previously admitted in court that he failed to report $531,408.38 in gross income, which would have required about $236,945 in tax payments. He admitted concealing $1,061,000 from 2016 to 2018.
Marino pleaded guilty on Feb. 6. He has paid the back taxes to the IRS.
