Press release from Onondaga Community College: March 25, 2022 Keith Hale '18 turned an internship at Nucor Steel in Auburn into the beginning of his career. He's pictured in OCC's Whitney Applied Technology Center in 2018 while working toward his Electrical Technology degree. Keith Hale '18 has a message for any student considering attending the upcoming Applied Technologies Career Showcase on the OCC campus. "Opportunities like this can be life changing. It's an opportunity to get into an actual career where you retire with benefits. However important you think the future is, that's how important it is to not miss an opportunity like this." Hale should know. After serving 9 years in the United States Army which included three tours of duty in Afghanistan, Hale was honorably discharged from Fort Drum's 10th Mountain division and enrolled in OCC's Electrical Technology degree program. While he was a student here he took advantage of an internship opportunity at Nucor Steel in Auburn. After completing his degree in December 2018, he continued his internship until a full-time position opened up. Today Hale is still at Nucor Steel, working as an Electrical Technician. His skills are utilized for preventive maintenance, repairs, and long-term projects. "Working at Nucor changed my life. I've only been there two years and I've bought two houses, gotten married, I have two kids, and a third is on the way. Everything has changed because of Nucor." Students in OCC's School of Computing & Applied Technologies will have the opportunity to follow in Hale's footsteps, thanks to the upcoming Applied Technologies Career Showcase. Attendees will be able to meet employers and learn about internship and employment opportunities. And while they are on campus, employers will meet with faculty, explain their workforce needs, and see the College's facilities.
