Description

Press release from the City of Ames: December 4, 2020 Welch Avenue will be open to through traffic on Saturday evening, Dec. 5, or Sunday, Dec. 6, following the completion of pavement markings. The City of Ames has contracted with Con-Struct Inc., for the Welch Avenue project. Subcontractor Iowa Plains will be completing the pavement markings beginning Dec. 5, weather permitting, and is expected to complete this work in one day. Welch Avenue will remain closed to through traffic from Lincoln Way to Chamberlain Street until the pavement markings are complete. Access to the CVS/Kingland parking lot will also be limited during this work. The Welch Avenue project will be substantially completed after the painting of pavement markings, and construction activities will be finished for the winter. Due to cold temperatures, work will resume in the spring to plant perennials and trees. The entire project included replacing original infrastructure that is more than a century old, along with Welch Avenue pavement reconstruction and water quality improvements. Special features of the new Welch Avenue include bike lanes in both travel lanes, permeable pavers and tree trenches for improved stormwater management, and extended sidewalks.
