Press release from the City of Ames: December 18, 2020 At approximately 6:50 p.m. on Thursday Dec. 17, the Ames Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire at 3617 Ross Road. Upon arrival, crews found smoke and flames coming from the front of the home. Firefighters contained the fire to the living room area and quickly extinguished it before it spread to the rest of the home. There were no residents home at the time of the fire, which was reported by witnesses who noticed flames in the windows and called 911. No injuries were reported. Damage is estimated at $15,000. The cause of the fire remains under investigation. The Ames Fire Department reminds residents that working smoke alarms save lives. Test your smoke detectors monthly to ensure that they are working properly. During the holidays, please remember to maintain fresh water in live Christmas trees, be mindful while cooking, and never leave lit candles unattended.
