EAST PROVIDENCE, RI — As Rhode Island slowly begins to reopen its economy amid the coronavirus health crisis, the city of East Providence has extended its State of Emergency order through July 8. The emergency declaration allows municipalities to put forth executive orders regarding cancellation of events, and that influence private business, that might not otherwise be allowed under standard governing operations. The emergency declaration also opens the city to additional funding from state and federal sources. East Providence announced the extension based upon that Mayor Bob DaSilva "has not judged the danger posed by the COVID-19 pandemic to have passed, or the disaster to have been dealt with to the extent that emergency conditions no longer exist, and the state of municipal emergency can be terminated." East Providence has followed state guidelines on the phased-in reopening of businesses after Gov. Gina Raimondo's stay-at-home order was allowed to expire on May 8.
