Press release from the City of South Bend: June 12, 2020 Starting Monday, June 15, the La Porte Avenue and West Washington Street intersection will close as construction begins on the West Washington Improvement Project. Work will include new curbs, sidewalks, bump outs, pavement and storm sewers on West Washington Street from Charles Martin Sr. Drive/Chapin Street to La Porte Avenue, including both intersections. The project also includes the removal of the westbound right turn lane from Washington to La Porte and narrowing of the two intersections to create shorter pedestrian crossings and a safer environment for all users. Washington Street and Charles Martin Sr. Drive/Chapin Street will remain open with restrictions during most of construction. A two-day closure of Washington Street is expected early July for the installation of storm sewers. The anticipated completion date for this project is the end of July, weather permitting.
