Description

Join us for the third of twenty two hikes exploring North Carolina! Explore North Carolina while hiking with the USO NC Outdoor Adventure Team! Each month we will have hikes planned around the state for attendees to enjoy getting out and experiencing some great views! Scavenger hunt sheets will be provided for children upon request. A confirmation email with meetup information will be provided to attendees prior to event. From NC State Parks: Hikers, trail runners, bicyclists and equestrians cherish the extensive network of hiking and multi-use trails at William B. Umstead State Park. Trailheads on both sides of the park—accessible from Interstate 40 and US 70—surround three manmade lakes. The largest is Big Lake, offering canoe and rowboat rentals. Fishing is welcome at all the lakes and connecting tributaries. At both access areas, picnic grounds surround shelters with fireplaces that can be reserved. More than twenty miles of hiking trails provide access to most of William B. Umstead State Park. Visitors may choose between a short stroll along a nature trail or a more extensive hike into the woods. Either choice will be rewarding as the beauty and diversity of the park's natural resources are best seen from any one of its many trails. Some of the trails at the park interconnect; to avoid becoming lost, pay close attention to trail markers. No bikes or horses are allowed on hiking trails. Planned Route (in order start to finish): USO NC staff will only be hiking the predetermined trails below; however, attendees may choose other/additional trails at their discretion and may set their own pace to hike beyond the group if they choose.
