EAST GREENWICH, RI — An East Greenwich police officer was awarded a Level II commendation after he saved a choking man at a restaurant last summer. Patrolman Bond Sauer administered the Heimlich maneuver on August 31. Sauer was called to an East Greenwich restaurant around 5:30 p.m., where a man was in "dire distress" after choking on food. Using the Heimlich maneuver, he was able to dislodge the food, saving the man's life. Sauer then checked the man's vitals signs, ensuring that he was breathing and had a pulse. Patrolman David Delbonis and Firefighters Lt. Michael Monaghan, Lt. Mert Greene, Firefighter Kevin King and Firefighter Sean Cute all assisted in providing medical care. "Great job by Patrolman Sauer and all the emergency personnel!" The East Greenwich Police Department wrote in a statement.
