Protect Lake Michigan: Community Conversation & Training
Coal ash, the toxic, health-damaging waste product of burning coal, is currently leaking into Lake Michigan and Trail Creek at the NIPSCO coal-burning plant in Michigan City, Indiana. Lake Michigan is a drinking water supply for more than 10 million people, and many residents depend on Trail Creek for recreation and as a food source.
On Saturday, Apr. 16th at 1 PM, join Just Transition Northwest Indiana (JTNWI) and community leaders for a conversation and training to learn about our efforts and what we can do to take action and ensure environmental justice. Snacks and refreshments will be served, and masks are required. This event is entirely free and open to the public.
Background on the issue:
NIPSCO is leaving millions of tons of coal ash buried in place at the Michigan City coal plant, seeping into the lake and creek. Although five other on-site waste pits will be removed tentatively beginning in Spring 2022, there is no plan to address the legacy coal ash as the plant prepares to retire as early as 2026. Safe, complete removal and cleanup of coal ash in Michigan City would create lasting environmental, economic, and health benefits for our communities in Michigan City and the larger region.
