WESTFIELD, NJ — Coming to Windsor Park in Westfield this summer is a brand new playground, with plenty of slides and new swing sets for children to enjoy.
Last month, Westfield's town council awarded a contract for the installation of the playground to Ben Schaffer Recreation Inc. of Lake Hopatcong. Councilman David Contract recently posted on Facebook renderings of playground that were just released.
"It looks amazing and hopefully will be installed sometime this summer," Contract said in his post. "Please share your thanks with the Westfield Recreation Commission for prioritizing this playground for upgrading this year."

At the town meeting on Feb. 22, the council approved an allocation of $87K for the purchase of the playground equipment. A grant of $43K from the Union County Open Space, Recreation Trust Fund, Kids Recreation Grants is going toward this purchase, lessening the cost for the town.
Windsor Park is only 0.5 acres — a relatively small park compared to larger ones in the area like Mindowaskin Park and Gumbert Park.
In the 2019 Recreation Master Plan, the town explains how Windsor Park has a variety of issues — a lack of walkways, aging surfaces and equipment, limited accessibility (ADA) and poor condition of fencing.
The Union County Open Space grant will help to update numerous facilities and add accessibility options parks throughout the county similar to Windsor Park.
The full park master plan can be viewed on Westfield's website.
