Seattle Adjusts Street Parking Prices, Starting Monday

SEATTLE — New on-street parking rates are coming to Seattle on Monday, which will vary by neighborhood, time of day, and demand. The Seattle Department of Transportation detailed the changes in a blog post Friday, noting that several neighborhoods will actually see lower hourly parking prices during the afternoon and evening. SDOT said its new rate scale was designed based on a decade of data and analysis, with an overall goal of ensuring at least one or two spaces are open on each block throughout the day. Officials said 95 percent of locations and times will see hourly rates at or below $2, and unchanged or lower than before in more than half of neighborhoods. Data collected in January found that one or two spaces were generally available when street parking occupancy was between 70 and 85 percent. Rates will be reduced in areas with occupancy below the 70 percent threshold and increased where they are above 85 percent. The sliding scale will be highest in most locations during the mid-day. According to SDOT, roughly a third of Seattle's paid street parking will see rates go up by 50 cents of $1. Previously, Seattle's highest hourly rate was $5, and under the new structure they will max out at $3.
