Press release from the Town of Bedford: March 24, 2022 The rivers in and around Bedford have been flowing at higher than normal levels and ground water is already high for the season. For example, the Shawsheen River has been flowing at a level in February 2022 that is twice the average volume of February flows over the last twenty-five years. Based on these current water levels, there is a good chance that throughout the spring months residents will encounter higher than normal water on their property. Early spring is a good time for residents to be preparing for spring flooding: is your sump pump working? Where does it drain to? Have you tested your generator? Are your gutters clear and do the downspouts move the water away from the home? Are your home's mechanical systems protected from flooding? To support residents during this potentially wet spring season, The Department of Public Works will provide sand bags and sand for residents to collect and use. Empty sand bags (up to 10 per household) will be available at no cost at the Public Works office at 314 The Great Road between 8 and 4 Monday to Friday, starting Monday March 28th. Sand will be available in a pile at the entrance to Springs Brook Park (171 Springs Road). Residents can fill up sand bags that they have picked up at the DPW office, or fill their own containers. Sand bags will not be available at Springs Brook Park. Residents should bring their own shovels.
