The City of West Des Moines Human Rights Commission and Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) will host a Candlelight Vigil for Ukraine at the Jamie Hurd Amphitheater by City Hall on Thursday, March 24, at 7:00 p.m. The public is invited to attend this event, which will feature a performance of "Prayer for Ukraine" by the Valley High School Vocal Music Program. The City Council is expected to pass a resolution declaring March 24 as a Day of Solidarity with Ukraine. Speakers at the event include Mayor Russ Trimble, Councilmember Renee Hardman, DEI Director Audrey Kennis, and WDM Human Rights Commissioner Rev. Milton Cole-Duvall. In addition, Valley High School students Matthew Zhuravlov and Marharyta Tataryna, both from Ukraine, also will speak. Attendees are encouraged to wear blue and yellow in support of the people of Ukraine. Donations may be directed to the following organizations who are assisting in relief efforts: Save the Children Ukrainian Red Cross UNICEF Parking is available in the City Hall parking lot and attendees may bring chairs and blankets. The Valley Southwoods forum area will serve as a back-up location if the weather becomes an issue.
