ST. CHARLES, IL — The size of a proposed apartment complex has become the topic of concern for some St. Charles residents who believe the five-story complex should not abut a neighborhood with single-family homes.
The proposed River East Lofts development at the southeast corner of Illinois and Riverside avenues includes a five-story building with one- and two-bedroom apartments as well as space for retailers, according to Shaw Media. Developers have been working to shrink the size of the building after hearing initial concerns. The current plan calls for 43 total units, down from 48, and is four inches shorter in height.
The current height of 59 feet is still higher for a building in the zoning district in the area, which is a maximum of 50 feet.
The St. Charles Planning and Zoning Commission took a look at the new plan during a public hearing, which was continued until the next plan commission meeting on April 19. Developer Curt Hurst says the development could bring in $225,000 in new tax revenue for the city, Shaw Media reports.
