JOLIET, IL — Thirteen months after Cordairel "Cord" Whitmore was released from the Will County Jail after posting $500 cash, the Nicholson Street resident shot three times by Joliet police officer Brian Lanton is back in custody. The 30-year-old Whitmore, who faces one felony aggravated assault charge, was taken back into custody at the Will County Jail on March 14. Whitmore had been free for the past year as he awaits his felony trial at the Will County Courthouse. This month, Will County Judge Carmen Goodman declared that Whitmore is mentally unfit to stand trial. However, Dr. Robert Vaca Jr. believes his mental competency can be restored in the future, the judge's order indicates. Court records indicate that Goodman revoked Whitmore's bail "for the solo purpose of his inpatient treatment by the Elgin Mental Health Facility." The judge ordered the Illinois Department of Health Services to immediately bring Whitmore to the Elgin Mental Health Facility for his treatment. Goodman set May 6 for a status hearing in her courtroom regarding Whitmore's ongoing mental health treatment at Elgin. Last May, the Will Grundy Major Crimes Task Force announced that the veteran Joliet police officer was justified in shooting Whitmore on Jan. 28, 2021. The shooting happened around 10:20 a.m. in Joliet's Cunningham Neighborhood area. Whitmore lives at the house with his mother, and she was not home at the time of the shooting. Whitmore was shot three times by Lanton. Joliet police officials announced last year that "at 10:17 a.m. officers of the Joliet Police Department were dispatched to 1200 Nicholson Street in Joliet for a disturbance. Upon arrival, officers spoke with Cordairel M. Whitmore on scene. It was reported to members of the task force, that one of the officers went to his squad car to obtain paperwork on mental health facilities to provide to Whitmore. "As Cordairel M. Whitmore was speaking with Joliet Police Officer Brian Lanton on the front porch of the residence, the offender produced what appeared to be a handgun and pointed it at Officer Brian Lanton." Whitmore spent a few days recovering from his gunshot wounds at St. Joe's hospital before being booked into the Will County Jail.
