LAKEVILLE, MN — Students in Lakeville are among those that will benefit from an $8.2 million grant to support the Safe Routes to School program across Minnesota.
The city of Lakeville will use the money for a street reconstruction project adjacent to Lakeville South High School, Paul Oehme — Lakeville's public works director — told Patch.
The Safe Routes to School program is funded through a combination of state and federal dollars.
"Thousands of school children now have more opportunities to walk and bike to schools because of the Safe Routes to School program," said Nancy Daubenberger, interim MnDOT commissioner, in a news release.
"More students walking and biking means less traffic on the road and near schools, improving safety and promoting healthier kids."
