CALABASAS, CA — The Agoura Hills/Calabasas Community Center is set to reopen in late fall 2022 after receiving much needed funds for essential repairs, the cities announced on Friday. Congressman Ted Lieu helped secure a $1 million federal grant for the Agoura Hills/Calabasas Community Center, according to the city of Calabasas. More locally, Los Angeles County Supervisor Sheila Kuehl helped the center secure an additional $1.01 million in grants to help with the necessary roof repairs. The fate of the community center has been called into question after significant revenue losses due to pandemic closures. After being closed for nearly two years, it was determined the facility would need maintenance and repairs totaling over $1 million to reopen, according to the city of Agoura Hills. Agoura Hills and Calabasas each contributes $50,000 to the center every year, and the center recently received a $166,000 grant from the Regional Park and Open Space District, which wouldn't nearly cover the $1 million price tag. The center is expected to reopen in phases based on construction, the cities said in a news release. "These funds which move us closer to opening are literally a life saver for many people who depended on the center for their well-being and I am so grateful to County Supervisor Sheila Kuehl and Congressman Lieu for recognizing this community need," Calabasas Mayor Mary Sue Maurer said in a news release.
