PROVIDENCE, RI — Phase four of reopening isn't coming any time soon in Rhode Island. Last week, Gov. Gina Raimondo signed an executive order extending phase three through October. Phase three, which started June 30, was extended through the end of August, and again through the end of September. This latest extension applies through Oct. 28. In late July, the social gathering limit was lowered from 25 people to 15. Raimondo cited concerns about coronavirus transmission due to a lack of mask-wearing and social distancing at informal gatherings. At the time, Dr. Nicole Alexander-Scott, the director of the Rhode Island Department of Health, said it was essential to be careful at backyard barbecues and other celebrations. "There is too much transmission going on right now, particularly tied to the social gatherings," Alexander-Scott said. "Wearing masks is critical. Wearing masks is key ... Too many people have told us they could have done better ... Too many young people are identified multiple, multiple contacts."
