SAN CLEMENTE, CA — San Clemente beaches and the municipal pier are once again open for business, seven days a week, the city said. For the time being, beach use is "active use only," according to interim city manager, Robert Dunek. According to Dunek, the city worked diligently with Gov. Gavin Newsom's office, ironing out San Clemente's reopening plan. After pictures of packed Orange County beaches aired last week, Gov. Gavin Newsom called for an immediate beach closure in the county. Days later, Newsom's office determined the San Clemente beach plan was "consistent with the Governor's March 19, 2020 Executive Order," according to the Governor's Office of Emergency Services. Therefore, beaches operated by the City of San Clemente are now permitted to reopen under this beach management plan, Mark Ghilarducci, Director of the Governor's Office of Emergency Services wrote. "Vigilance will be necessary to support successful implementation and preventunsafe conditions." The San Clemente pier will once again open Tuesday, they said. It is imperative that residents and visitors follow all social distancing guidelines. Pier and beach fishing is prohibited until further notice. "Those who wish to enjoy the pier need to avoid stopping along railings and benches," Dunek said. The city of San Clemente received thanks for their "ongoing collaboration and leadership during this critical time," according to the letter. "We appreciate your commitment to protect the health of the public while providing safe beach recreation." If you see a sheriff's deputy, Marine Safety officer or Park Ranger, don't despair. They are there to educate beachgoers and seek voluntary compliance.
