It's starting. Something I didn't really think about when all of this quarantine stuff began. My tiny little hair follicles are sprouting changing hair color atop my head like the leaves on a tree from summer to autumn. Except, instead of transforming into a brilliant shade of auburn or burgundy, my hair is turning... gray. Ouch. It hurt to type that. My hair appointment was scheduled for Tuesday, April 7. It has come and gone, and I am colorless. I'm forty-seven years old. I'm not ready. I know that there are worse things in life. I am one very lucky individual. I have my health, I have my family. But for this, I am in mourning. I miss my hairdresser, Melissa. I miss our chats. I miss how she colors my hair with the artistic touch like Caravaggio. And I miss her running her fingers through my hair when she's shampooing and rinsing out my color. She has this magic touch no one else has. Now, I'm left to my own devices. I bought two different brands of "root touch-ups."And they're "permanent." Well, it says on the box it lasts three weeks. The shades I purchased were "medium brown." Is that what I am? Medium brown? I have no idea. You know who would know? Melissa. I've experimented with so any different shades of blond and browns, even reds, that my hair is a hodgepodge of colors. Lovely colors that all blend and harmonize so strikingly well, it could only be done at the hands of a professional. I placed the picture of the models on the boxes of "root touch-up" to my face to compare hair color. I guess it looks close enough. I mean, what's the worst that could happen? I haven't brought myself to performing this procedure as of yet. I'm too chicken. If anyone is going to mess it all up, it's going to be me. But eventually, I'm going to have to break down and give it a go. So what if I end up looking like Cruella Deville? She was a woman ahead of her time. I can only pray that my first attempt at home hair color goes, dare I say it, Nice n'Easy. I've posted my first music video ever and it's dedicated to all the hairstylists out there. It's entitled "I Got Some Roots"something many of us are experiencing right now. Hairdressers everywhere, we love you, we miss you, and we need you. You are the unsung heros that keep many of us looking young and fierce. (At least in our own minds.) I Got Some Roots - a song parody based on "No Roots" by Alice Merton.
