Lane Closures Coming To Broadway, Broad Street Bridges

PROVIDENCE, RI — Lane closures are on the way for downtown Providence as the Rhode Island Department of transportation begins construction on the Broadway and Broad Street bridges. Each will be cut down to two lanes from four, starting Monday. The first phase of construction will be in place for about 11 months as crews replace the northern side of both bridges. Walking access will be available on the open side of the bridge, and Interstate 95 will not be affected. Starting next spring, traffic will be shifted to the newly replaced side of the bridge to allow the demolition of the southern side. Construction is set to be complete on the Broadway bridge by the end of 2021, and by spring 2022 on the Broad Street bridge. Both bridges are 57 years old and are classified as structurally deficient. Broad Street carries around 13,260 vehicles per day, while approximately 15,000 vehicles cross Broadway each day. The replacement projects are part of the $19.5 million Bridge Group One in Providence.
