San Clemente Shooting Leaves 1 Dead, Homeless Outreach Involved

SAN CLEMENTE, CA —One person has died after a deputy-involved shooting in San Clemente Wednesday, according to reports. Two Homeless Outreach Officers in the area made contact with a man, believed to be homeless, on the 3000 block of El Camino Real, shortly before 1:15 p.m., according to department spokesman Dennis Breckner. The deputies made contact with an adult black man who was homeless for undisclosed reasons, according to Breckner. A short time later, "a physical altercation broke out between the man and one officer," Breckner tells Patch. Video from a nearby business shows the altercation between the man and one officer descend into a "ground fight," Breckner says. When it became apparent the man tried to get control of the officer's gun, the second deputy fired, Breckner says. The homeless man was struck, and died at the scene though officers attempted CPR, Patch was told. Emergency responders arrived, but the homeless man whose name has not yet been released, was pronounced dead at the scene. The Orange County District Attorney's Office will conduct an investigation into the incident, Breckner says. At about noon, OCSD San Clemente officers responded to a "person down" call in the same area. However, department spokesperson Carrie Braun did not believe that to be related to the shooting incident. Patch will update this post when more information is received. Please refresh for the latest.
