PROVIDENCE, RI — The driver of a tractor-trailer truck was killed in a rollover crash on Interstate 95 early Tuesday morning. This was the fourth fatal highway crash in the state in less than a week. According to state police, the crash happened in the center lane of the highway near the Charles Street overpass in Providence, just before 6 a.m. The truck, which was heading south, swerved left across the high-speed lane, hitting the jersey barrier that divides the highway, rolling over and sliding into the high speed lane of I-95 North, facing south. The driver, Jan Kopczynski, 42, of Bronxville, New York, was rushed to Rhode Island Hospital with serious injuries, where he later died. He was not wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash, police said. Two other vehicles, not directly involved in the crash, were damaged when they hit a light pole that was knocked over by the truck, and traffic was reduced to a single lane as police worked to clear the scene. Anyone with information about the crash is asked to reach out to the state police Lincoln Woods Barracks at 401-444-1100.
