PROVIDENCE, RI — Rhode Island's Electoral College convened Monday to cast their votes for the 2020 presidential election. All four voted for President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris. Because Gov. Gina Raimondo is in quarantine after Rhode Island Department of Health Director Nicole Alexander-Scott tested positive for coronavirus, she joined virtually, but was still on the premises. Secretary of State Nellie Gorbea presided over the vote. "As we close out the Electoral College and the 2020 election cycle, I offer a heartfelt thank you to elections workers across the state for ensuring access to the ballot box while protecting the integrity of every vote in the midst of a pandemic," Gorbea said. "I'd like to remind all Rhode Islanders of the motto our state was founded on some 400 years ago — Hope. Now is the time for us to heal as a state and as a country to work towards the common Hope of a better tomorrow." Rhode Island's four electors were Elizabeth Jane Beretta-Perik, James A. Diossa, Sabina Matos and Joseph Robert Paolino, Jr. Paolino was named president of the electoral college, and Matos secretary. The votes will be made official Jan. 6, when the U.S. Congress is set to meet in a joint session to count the electoral votes. The election will be made official once a candidate reaches 270 votes. Rhode Island's Electoral College has officially cast our four electoral votes for Joe Biden and Kamala Harris as our next President and Vice President of the United States. It's a great day for our democracy.— Gina Raimondo (@GovRaimondo) December 14, 2020
