Need mechanical car help, possible head gasket replacement in Subaru

Had cracked radiator which caused overheating, replaced radiator, smoke coming out of exhaust now, told head gasket replacement needed. Not personally for sure if that's what it is, so if you're mechanical & familiar with Subaru to take a look, auto shop wants way too much $$$$$ for it's age 2002 & high mileage but would pay reasonable labor for someone to do on the side.
