Irrigation System and Infrastructure Technician at Mount Auburn Cemetery Organization: Mount Auburn Cemetery comprises 175 acres and is situated in Watertown and Cambridge near Boston, Massachusetts. As an accredited arboretum, Mount Auburn features 5,000 trees and more than 20,000 plants overall. Role and Responsibilities: The Facilities Department at Mount Auburn Cemetery is seeking an enthusiastic individual to fill the position of Irrigation System and Infrastructure Technician. Reporting to the Facilities Manager, the technician will perform routine maintenance, repair, and improvement of the irrigation system throughout the Cemetery, and works closely with supervisor to coordinate contracted repairs. Also monitors the performance of the Cemetery-wide drainage system to track problem areas and make recommendations for cleaning, repair or replacement of catch basins and drainage pipes. Often may be required to assist other departments, including interments or facilities maintenance, as assigned by supervisor • Performs routine tasks and repairs to irrigation system, spigots and irrigation heads using plumbing and masonry tools etc. Installs new irrigation lines and maintains existing lines. Advises supervisor with respect to purchasing tools, equipment and materials required for irrigation system maintenance and repair. • Oversees the yearly start-up and shut-down of the irrigation system, troubleshooting issues as they arise. Seeks input from other staff to identify and correct problems. Coordinates with supervisor when repairs by outside contractors are necessary. • Keeps pump house orderly and monitors operation of all equipment inside. Reports issues to supervisor and assist in coordinating repair. • Maintains all fountains in the Cemetery. Cleans or replaces filters, and monitors operation of pumps, piping and other aspects of the fountains. Makes repairs or recommends contracted repairs as necessary. • Fills small potholes in roads and reports larger potholes or deterioration to supervisor. Assists in determining priorities for road patching or asphalt replacement. • Operates a variety of general maintenance equipment such as turf vehicles, compressor, jackhammer, plate compactor, and dump truck with trailer. Once trained and licensed, operates backhoe and other hoisting equipment. Qualifications and physical demands include but are not limited to: • High School Diploma or GED required. • One to two years of related experience required • Experience installing and maintaining irrigation systems; including standpipes, drip lines, and pop-up heads preferred. • Familiarity with Hunter irrigation controls; and galvanized, copper, cast iron, PVC, and 1” and 2” poly piping preferred. • A valid driver’s license is required. Massachusetts CDL and class 2B hoisting and backhoe license a plus. Will be required to obtain a Massachusetts 2B Hoisting and backhoe license with a year of employment. • Able to read a ruler, map and use basic math skills. • Some knowledge and experience with Microsoft Office applications is required. • Ability to communicate fluently in English (spoken and written) with staff, vendors and clients is required. Ability to communicate in Spanish is a plus. • Able to shovel snow, dirt and/or loam as needed and assigned. • Able to work alone and under supervision. • Able to work outside in all weather conditions including cold, heat, snow, rain and other harsh weather. • Able to operate a jackhammer, backhoe and other heavy equipment. • Able to stand, walk, kneel and/or bend for long periods of time. • Able to climb and carry a ladder above and beneath ground. Hours of Work: 7:30 AM to 3:30 PM on Monday to Friday. May occasionally work other hours or days.
