The SIBBA is hosting a symposium in April of 2022. This event is not just for martial artists. This SIBBA Symposium is a unique opportunity to attend diverse sessions led by experienced black belts. The day will start off will an informal referee seminar in the morning and the afternoon will be filled with educational, yet fun, learning opportunities. Please join us. Attendees will be able to select three sessions to attend. For those interested in upping their referee skills and knowledge, there is an additional referee session for red belts and higher in the morning. Most of these classes are introductory and martial arts' experience is not required. Schedule 10:00 AM - Registration and Check-in for Taekwondo Referee Seminar12:00 PM - Registration and Check-in for SIBBA Symposium (not attending Referee Seminar)12:15-12:30 PM - Opening Ceremony12:40-1:50 PM - Session 12:00-3:10 PM - Session 23:20-4:30 PM - Session 34:40-5:00 PM- Closing Comments and EvaluationsReferee Seminar - 10:00-11:30AM Taekwondo Referee Seminar – Master Mike Wickham - The average Taekwondo practitioner views sparring as complicated - rule changes, ring changes, scoring changes, ever evolving changes. How can one keep all of these changes straight? Well, that is what Master Wickham will deliver in his session in the 2022 SIBBA Symposium. He will cover not just rules, but consistencies that have stood the test of time. Master Wickham is an IR-1st Class in Kyorugi. He is the Iowa Taekwondo Alliance Referee chair and NCTA co-referee chair. Master Wickham has refereed USA Olympic Team Trials, multiple Pan Am Games, World University Games and World Cup Teams Trials and has refereed USA Nationals countless times. In 2014, he was one of two referees selected to go to China for the World University Championships. Master Wickham is a 6th Dan and the head of the Marshalltown Parks and Rec Taekwondo program. __________________________ Session 1 Options - 12:40-1:50pm Practical Self Defense - Moriah Morgan - There is no one move or technique you can learn that will work in any and every situation you might encounter. Practical Self Defense aims to teach you the thought process with how we as humans respond to conflict and general techniques that can frequently be used. This session will focus on de-escalation, general escapes from an attacker, and joint manipulation. Moriah Morgan has been practicing and teaching self-defense through Iowa State University for 11 years and studied under Grand Master YC Pak. (Ages 7 and up) Competitive Poomsae - Master Alexis Redeker – This session will be a refresher or assist the poomsae athletes in their techniques and flexibility. Master Redeker is a 3rd Degree Taekwondo Black Belt who has competed nationally and internationally in Poomsae. She will adjust the class to her attendees. Taekwondo uniforms are preferred, but not mandated. This course will be for orange belts and up. Taekwondo uniforms are preferred but students can wear street clothes if they choose. Systema - Master Lance Rewerts – This session will be an introduction to Systema, which is a modern martial combat system developed within the Russian Special Operations units but originating in ancient Russian folk fighting traditions. Master Rewerts will touch on striking and sparring and demonstrate how to strike with heaviness rather than strength, and combine movements with striking to create more powerful strikes while also managing the space. Master Rewerts started his martial arts training at Iowa State University in 1988 with Grand Master Yong Chin Pak and has been training continuously for almost 35 years since. He holds a 3rd degree black belt in Hapkido, a 1st degree black in TKD, with additional training in Judo and Aiki jujutsu He was introduced to Systema in 2003 and has been teaching under Vladimir Vasiliev since 2006. He currently teaches a small but dedicated group in Des Moines. Participants should wear comfortable training clothes. (Ages 13 and up) __________________________ Session 2 Options - 2:00-3:10PM First Aid - Master Shane Johnson - First Aid is a necessary thing that all people should know and a simple thing to do. Master Shane Johnson is a 4th degree in Taekwondo, 2nd degree in Judo and Hapkido. He has been certified as a combat lifesaver while in the military since 2008 and been certified in first aid, CPR, and AED use following that. Kali - Stick/Knife - Master Lane Swalve – This session is an introduction to the Kali art of stick and knife fighting. Master Swalve will pass on some basic principles and movements related to Kali. He will demonstrate how to use a stick for defense and offense, as well as how to defend against a knife with “stick against knife” techniques. Master Swalve learned Kali under the guidance of a Philippian Kempo instructor who was taught at a very young age. Master Swalve is a fifth degree in Taekwondo and Chinese Kempo Karate. He also trains or has experience in Hapkido, Kuhapdo, and Systema. (Ages 7 and up) Hapkido - Moriah Morgan - Hapkido is a Korean martial arts meaning 'the way of coordinated power.' It is a sister art to Aikido and derived from Daitō-ryū Aiki-jūjutsu. Hapkido is most commonly practiced as a self-defense art. It utilizes several different types of movements and techniques seen in other arts such as kicking and throwing but primarily focuses on joint locks and manipulation. Moriah Morgan has been practicing and teaching Hapkido through Iowa State University for 11 years and studied under Grand Master Yong Chin Pak. (Ages 16 and up) __________________________ Session 3 Options - 3:20-4:30PM At the Ringside - Master Anne Chase – Master Chase will speak to her audience – coaches, athletes, parents - and answer all of their referee and coaching questions to the best of her abilities. If she does not know the answer, she will find it. As a National medalist, a coach of national and international medalists, a tournament committee member, and longtime international referee, Master Chase has immense knowledge and wisdom to share with those interested. Master Chase is a 6th Degree black belt who trained under Grand Master Pak and continues to be very visible in the Pak family at various events and functions. Kettlebells/Kickboxing - Master Anne Neumann - This will be an introduction to kettlebells and kettlebell kickboxing. This is designed to help you with mobility, stability, power and endurance. Master Neumann is a third degree Taekwondo Black Belt and a Certified Kettlebell Instructor. Preferred attire is workout clothes but can be done in a Taekwondo uniform. This will be for all belt ranks and ages. If you have a kettlebell that you want to bring, that would be helpful. Ages 7 and up. Yoga - Master Irene P. Faass - The Western practice of yoga is informed by Vedic traditions from ancient India. As a mind-body practice, it supports holistic health and wellness. A regular yoga practice can supplement a martial artist’s practice by focusing on breath and positions/shapes (asana) that help to stretch muscles and joints and increase flexibility. Dr. Master Faass earned her 4th Degree Black Belt in TaeKwonDo from Grand Master Pak, has been practicing yoga for almost 3 decades, and has completed Core Power Yoga’s 200-hour teacher training program and Street Yoga’s trauma-informed teaching program. Comfortable workout clothes preferred. If you have a yoga mat you want to bring, that would be helpful.
