CCRI Outlines Plans For Virtual Commencement, Return To Campus

WARWICK, RI — Although the future remains uncertain, the Community College of Rhode Island is planning to resume in-person classes in the fall. The college has planned a virtual commencement celebration for the Class of 2020. In a message to students, CCRI President Meghan Hughes thanked everyone for their commitment and quick transition to distance learning, saying the school's "collective success in surmounting the challenges presented by the pandemic is simply extraordinary." "I know there have been challenges. This pandemic has required we teach, learn, and work in ways we never anticipated, and it has proven what we have always known about our students – they are resilient, hardworking, and committed to their education," Hughes said. "When faced with obstacles, they work with you to overcome them. I am incredibly proud of how everyone has persevered through the many challenges COVID-19 has presented. " Because traditional graduations are impossible under the current coronavirus crowd restrictions, the college will hold a virtual ceremony on May 29. Students will receive packages in the mail with more information i nthe coming days. "While a virtual commencement cannot replace coming together under one roof with our families and friends to celebrate, we will make sure it is meaningful and memorable," Hughes said. "We also invite all of this year's graduates to join us at our 2021 commencement next May so we can recognize their achievement." After coordinating with the Rhode Island Department of Health, the college decided to offer all planned summer courses remotely ahead of a planned reopening of campus in the fall. At this time, the plan is to return to in-person classes while still offering online options. College leadership will be in touch with teachers, faculty and students to seek input and is working with other schools and the Rhode Island Department of Health to find the best path forward, Hughes said. "I look forward to the time when we can welcome everyone back to campus," Hughes concluded. "Until then, please stay safe and be well."
