Education takes place in a multitude of places, including schools, churches, offices, healthcare facilities, or even simple conversations between friends. The type of environment where students are learning is essential to the retention rates of the material being learned. Sousa (2017) states that students are only able to learn in environments that feel safe and are free from danger or negative intentions. Whenever students feel threatened or frightened, their thoughts focus on how best to survive the situation rather than any educational material being presented. Research demonstrates that “positive emotions activate both cognitive and social resources, which leads to an increase in individuals’ active and explorative examination of their learning environment” (Schweder & Raufelder, 2021).
