FALMOUTH, MA — Did you see smoke billowing from Buzzards Bay on Wednesday?
A large smoke cloud prompted some discussion on social media, with one Facebook poster wondering if a boat had caught fire. Another person shared a photo showing the cloud visible from her office in New Bedford.
It turns out there was an innocent explanation for the smoke. According to Dukes County Emergency Management, there was a prescribed burn on Penikese Island in Buzzards Bay on Wednesday.
A prescribed burn is an intentional, supervised fire set under specified weather conditions to restore health to ecosystems that depend on fire, maintain certain historic scenes or prevent a more destructive fire in the future, Dukes County Emergency Management said.
Please be advised that there will be a #PrescribedBurn on #Penikese Island today.🔥 Thank you to Josh Nigro, District 1 #FireWarden with @massdcr.#ControlledBurn #EmergencyManagement #Gosnold #Cuttyhunk #CuttyhunkIsland #PenikeseIsland #ElizabethIslands #BuzzardsBay #DukesCounty pic.twitter.com/x6oBXhgrcW— Dukes County Emergency Management (@DukesCountyEM) March 23, 2022
