BELMONT, MA — Students and staff at Daniel Butler Elementary School in Belmont temporarily evacuated the building Thursday morning after the smell of natural gas was detected inside. The Belmont Fire Department and National Grid arrived at the scene on White Street around 8:40 a.m. Police said the gas company confirmed that there was no gas leak within the building just before 9:30 a.m. Students and staff had been moved to St. Luke's Church on Lexington Street for shelter but returned back to the school building after an investigation confirmed it was safe. Belmont police say there were brief detours in the area while the school was being evacuated. No additional information was immediately available.
