State Street Fire Raged For Hours, Displacing Several In Newtown

NEWTOWN, PA — Two apartments have been rendered uninhabitable and a Newtown business has temporarily closed its doors after a powerful fire broke out on State Street early Thursday morning, officials said. No one was injured, firefighter Tim Chamberlain of the Newtown Township Emergency Services Department told Patch on Thursday. He confirmed there was "extensive" damage, and that residents of two apartments were displaced, following the overnight fire that started in a third-floor apartment. The Pro Shop of Newtown, the street-level business below the apartments, was not able to open Thursday. "Please stay tuned as we have more information from the fire and building inspectors," the clothing and fitness store said online, thanking supporters who have reached out. The business has temporarily suspended online sales. Chamberlain said crews responded around 12:30 a.m and fought the fire intensively for about three hours. He said some firefighters are still going back and forth to the scene Thursday in the aftermath of the blaze. In video taken by Temperance House owner Kathy Buczek, a white car can be seen parked in front of a fire hydrant with a hose going through its smashed windows. "Kathy also provided sandwiches to all the first responders working during the night," a representative for the Temperance House told Patch.
