GILROY, CA — Two children on their way to school were struck by a car in Gilroy Wednesday morning, Gilroy police reported. The children were transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The collision occurred Wednesday at 7:55 a.m. at the intersection of Chestnut Street and Old Gilroy Street, according to the Gilroy Police Department. Upon arrival, police determined that the victims were two children struck while crossing the intersection on their way to Eliot School. School staff quickly arrived to provide assistance to students and families, police said.
Eliot Elementary School officials also told The Gilroy Dispatch that staff from the school and Rebekah Children's Services provided emotional support for students on campus.
The driver of the vehicle stopped, called 911, and cooperated with officers. Police say alcohol and drugs were not a factor in the collision.
In a Facebook post, the Gilroy Police Department encouraged families and drivers to review school transportation safety tips, including always crossing at crosswalks, and making eye contact with drivers before crossing.
