TUSCALOOSA, AL — The 10th annual Krispy Kreme Challenge is set for 10 a.m. on April 2, with the proceeds going to benefit Big Brothers Big Sisters of West Alabama. Click here to subscribe to our free Tuscaloosa Daily newsletter and breaking news alerts Founded in 1982, Big Brothers Big Sisters of West Alabama is the only professionally-supported, one-to-one mentoring program in the area, as the organization works to pair children with screened volunteer mentors. However, as is the case for many nonprofits, funding has become an issue as of late. "It is becoming increasingly more heartbreaking to get the phone calls requesting children to become part of our program," said Danielle McInerney, the executive director of the organization. "As much as we want to help every child who wants to be a part of our program, we currently lack the resources necessary to cover more territory under our umbrella successfully." This is where The Krispy Kreme Challenge comes in. The two-mile race features a doughnut eating competition in the middle, in addition to other activities, such as face painting, prizes, games, and more. Organizers say runners do not have to participate in the doughnut eating to compete in the race. Click here to register for the race.
