The Opportunity: Focusing primarily on sustainable recreational trail reconstruction and maintenance projects, the Trail Steward works as part of a regional team, focused in Western MA, to protect, restore, and enhance our trail resources and systems, the environment, and visitor experience through high quality trail work. In This Role You Will: • Perform both basic and advanced trail work to a high standard of quality • Perform heavy reconstructive trail work including, but not limited to: trail relocations, tread hardening, culvert installation, rock construction (waterbars and staircases), timber structures (bog bridges and waterbars), and new trail construction. • Perform routine monitoring and maintenance of trail systems, including updating wayfinding signage and blazing, removal of encroaching vegetation, clearing trails and entrances of hazard or downed trees, cleaning drainages, and checking trail conditions. • Assist with baseline standards assessments of trails and entrances. • Work within appropriate techniques and BMPs related to trail design, layout, building, maintenance, restoration, and preservation for sustainability and desired visitor experience • Work collaboratively as part of the Trails Team, with other staff across the organization, and with volunteers. • Use and maintains vehicles, tools, and equipment to the highest safety standards. • Perform other duties as assigned with or without accommodation. Qualifications: • Minimum of one year or season of experience associated with the responsibilities of the position. • Must be able to carry up to 50 pounds of gear and tools. • Must be able to perform sometimes difficult physical work in variable outdoor weather conditions. • Proven ability to work independently and collaboratively as a team member. • Proven ability to complete assigned projects and tasks, meet deadlines and manage multiple tasks. • Basic experience with trails and tools used for trail work, landscaping, gardening, and/or light carpentry preferred. • Interest in protecting the natural world and strong commitment to the mission of The Trustees. Other: • Valid driver’s license required for driving Trustees’ vehicles, must pass a driving background check per Trustees’ Driving Policy. • CORI check required • Must have access to a personal vehicle both for transport to and from the worksite at the beginning and end of the day, but also, with mileage reimbursement, between sites during the workday. Benefits and Salary: This is a full-time, Monday through Friday, seasonal, non-exempt, hourly paid position, with an optimal start date in May and running through November. This position is based in Ashfield, Florence or Windsor, MA but will travel throughout western MA and often start work on-property in the field.
