Description
Its time to give back to the planet. Come join us for an Earth Day celebration! (Our location will still be undergoing its curation process) Hi Friends, Get ready to roll up your sleeves and experience Earth Day, The Insect Asylum way! We are so excited to open our doors to you all for a one day experience where we honor our mother earth and take part in some mindful activities that will make us feel connected to our roots. Earth Day is a special day for us to reflect on the importance of our planet and how we can all encourage growth in this new year. The Plan: - Meet at The Insect Asylum at 11:00AM to pick up gloves and trash bags. That's right folks you guessed it..... we’re doing a neighborhood trash cleanup! Let’s help out our community by walking around on a beautiful day and carefully picking up the reminiscence of this past winter. Afterwards, we will all meet back at the museum at 1pm for refreshments and secondary activities. 1. Re- Potting Class led by Lynn, Owner of our local house plant shop Rooted, By Pollen. (1:30-2:30pm) This class will help you meet the spring needs of your favorite houseplants. To participate all you need is a plant you have cherished and want to see move up in this world, and a new home for said plant. The new pot must be at least 1-2 inches in diameter larger than your current pot. If you have extra pots to spare please bring them along, or if you want to donate your old pot we can act like hermit crabs and wait in line for the bigger plant to pass its home onto someone new. (If you don’t want to plant something but want to participate all you need to do is bring your listening ears and dive into the discussion!) Lynn is a dedicated horticulture expert/ enthusiast and an incredible human to boot! Her store is only a few doors down from us and is a beacon of light for all things that grow! You can check her out at rootedchicago.com or @rootedchicago on Instagram! 2. Everybody loves worms!!! So let’s get together to discuss vermicomposting and the benefits it can provide not only to your plants but also to the city. We will have a small pool full of dirt & worms for you and your littles to dig through and find! (3:00-3:30pm) 3. Don't forget to bring your most recent propagations, clippings or old plant friends ready for new adventures because we are having a plant exchange led by Catherine Woods of The Green Light District (drop off all day- pick up at 4pm-5:30pm) (Check her out on Instagram @the.green.light.district!) - Take a plant, leave a plant, plant a plant! ALL THE PLANTS.... But seriously, Catherine is an incredible individual who makes it easy for everyone to have a little bit of green in their home. Donations are always welcome in the form of plants, soil, rocks, containers to propagate in, as well as cash. She is always down to help pair you with a new friend that will fit your style of living. 4. Finally to round out the evening, we will have an artist driven conservation lecture by Pam Sloan (Visual Artist and Educator of 20 years) (6pm-7pm) Pam will be discussing her most recent body of work “Bats to Butterflies“ Which focuses on twelve species that are being monitored for conversational rehabilitation. These animals are among many struggling to survive in what remains of our regional wetlands, grasslands, and woodlands, systems vital to controlling toxic pollutants, CO2, and floodwaters. To learn more please visit: www.pamelasloan.com We are working hard to bring Chicago its first Insect and Taxidermy Museum that focuses on connecting to the beauty of nature in a non-traditional sense. During this event we will still be in our curation phase so the museum will not be put together fully, our grand opening will be in May. At The Insect Asylum we encourage you to explore and grow, as we do. Once we open our doors for good we are hoping you will engage with the exhibits and develop a true sense of belonging with nature. This is an artistic representation of vintage work so not everything will be perfect, but we see beauty in the imperfections. Our mission is to allow people to get excited, to learn and to grow. We understand that inspiration takes flight in many forms. Please come here to get inspired, to create, and to connect with a beautiful community! Also, please keep in mind The Insect Asylum is a self-funded endeavor. This labor of love will take some time to complete, and the more funds we raise the more we can bring to the community! We want to make our project affordable to everyone, so if you can afford to sponsor entrance for someone else please reach out. If you need to be sponsored to participate, please reach out or visit our website. We want to be able to include everyone. Donations of any kind are always welcome.
