Please join Japan House as we celebrate Spring!
Japan House is excited to invite guests back to one of our most beloved events of the year, our annual Spring Open House on Saturday, April 2, 2022.
Traditional Japanese tea ceremonies will be offered by the Chado Urasenke Tankokai Urbana-Champaign Association for $15 per person at 12pm, 1pm, 2pm and 3pm. In addition to a bowl of freshly-whisked matcha, a special Japanese sweet called matcha kirian will be served, made from recipes in “The Art of Wagashi,” written by Professor Emeritus Kimiko Gunji.
Tickets are required to attend a tea ceremony; no walk-ins will be permitted. Space is limited. Please dress appropriately, legs are covered traditionally in Japan. All guests will be asked to remove shoes (or use shoe covers) when entering Japan House, and to wear socks if participating in a tea ceremony.
In between tea ceremonies, a limited number of guests will be allowed to enter Japan House to quickly view the facility and the beautiful collection of Kokeshi, traditional Japanese wooden dolls. This particular collection of “Kokeshi (and Japanese Tops)” were a gift of Elsa and Professor Floyd Dunn (EE ’49, ’51, ’56); Cataloged by Atsuko Hashimoto.”
As part of the community event, Boneyard Arts Festival, a display of locally designed kokeshi will also be on display and visible all day through the windows on the east (deck) side of Japan House. https://www.eventbrite.com/e/modern-kokeshi-tickets-293361059827
