JERSEY CITY, NJ — U.S. marshals have arrested a West Orange man in North Carolina in connection with the homicide of a Jersey City man in November.
Damean Bates, 33, has been charged with attempted murder, unlawful possession of a weapon, and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose in connection with the fatal shooting of Ishamell McCany, 41, on Nov. 13, 2021 in Jersey City.
Bates was arrested Tuesday afternoon by members of the United States Marshals Service Eastern District of North Carolina Regional Fugitive Task Force. He is awaiting extradition to New Jersey.
On Saturday, Nov. 13, 2021, shortly after 4 a.m., the Jersey City Police Department responded to the area of Grant Avenue and Martin Luther King Drive in Jersey City after hearing gunshots. Officers found a male victim with a gunshot wound to the torso.
The victim, Ishamell McCany, 41, of Jersey City, was transported by Emergency Medical Services to Jersey City Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at approximately 4:20 a.m.
A second man, Anthony King, 35, of Jersey City, was arrested by the United States Marshals Service Eastern District of North Carolina Regional Fugitive Task Force two months later, on Jan. 13.
King was charged with murder and two weapons charges. He is currently detained at the Hudson County Correctional Facility.
