PROVIDENCE, RI — A Providence man was arrested Tuesday after police said he killed his girlfriend and hid her body inside a refrigerator. Nathan Cooper, 53, of Providence, was charged with murder in the death of his girlfriend Sherbert Maddox, 40. Around 2:30 a.m., police were called to a Parkis Avenue home and circumstances outside led to them going inside the apartment. Maj. David Lapatin in a news conference Wednesday said officers found Maddox's body wrapped in saran wrap and towels inside the fridge. Maddox appeared to have been shot and may have been dead since Sunday, Lapatin said. Cooper was also home, and police questioned him before getting a search warrant and later arresting him, police said. Police said they also found a handgun, which they believe was used in the killing. "Our investigation shows he did have some violent tendencies toward her in the past," Lapatin said. Cooper was scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday.
