PITTSBURGH, PA — Five Pittsburgh police officers have been fired following last year's incident involving Jim Rogers, who died after a stun gun was used on him multiple times after allegedly stealing a bicycle in Bloomfield.
Mayor Ed Gainey and Public Safety Director Lee Schmidt announced the move Wednesday. The terminated officers, who were not identified, have been given the option to retire.
Three other officers involved in the incident will be retained but are required to undergo retraining.
Rogers, 54, died a day after being stunned while he was being apprehended. The Allegheny County Medical Examiner's Office ruled the death accidental.
A grand jury investigation has been launched into Rogers' death to determine whether the officer involved in the incident should be criminally charged.
