AURORA, IL — Two new Hispanic-owned businesses are officially open in Aurora, including a barbershop and a mattress store. Both celebrated their brick-and-mortars with a ribbon-cutting ceremony Monday. The Zero Barbershop, located at 620 W. Park Ave., is owned by Edwin Arroyo, a licensed barber and father of four. The shop's name is a tribute to the "zero" setting on hair clippers, or the foundation of a haircut, according to Chief Communication Officer Clayton Muhammad. On the other side of town, at 1598 N. Farnsworth Ave., Augustito Allen celebrated the grand opening of Affordable Mattress, a company that specializes in providing quality bedding at an affordable price. Both business owners were joined by their friends and family to celebrate the ribbon cuttings. Arroyo was joined by Elvira, his wife, as well as his children, family members, clients and representatives of the Aurora Puerto Rican Cultural Council. Allen's girlfriend, Nancy, other family members and childhood friends joined him in celebrating the mattress store. Aurora Deputy Mayor Guillermo Trujillo, the first Latino to serve as deputy mayor, and representatives from the Aurora Hispanic Chamber of Commerce joined both business owners at their ceremonies. The new businesses join several others that have opened in 2022, including six Black-owned shops that opened their doors at Fox Valley Mall. Just a few days ago, the new Texas Roadhouse celebrated its grand opening after moving its operating from Naperville to Aurora.
