Press release from the Mecklenburg County Government: 3/17/2022 Description1 The weather is warming up, but the winter heating bills are coming due. March 31 is the last day for Mecklenburg County residents to apply for help through the Low Income Energy Assistance Program (LIEAP). LIEAP is a federal program that assists households with their home heating needs, so they won't have to choose between heating their homes and paying for other basic needs. Applicants do not have to be at risk of disconnection or delinquent to take advantage of this one-time, direct vendor payment in the amount of $300, $400, or $500. Applicants must meet the income guidelines, be responsible for the bill, provide their account number, and show proof of income. Households must meet the following criteria: One U.S. citizen or legal resident. Income below 130% of Federal Poverty Level. Responsible for energy bills. You DO NOT have to be behind on your heating bill for assistance. In addition to the application, an interview will be required, and applicants must provide: Any of the following forms of identification: State ID card, driver's license or passport Utility bill Social security number Proof of income APPLY: Residents can begin the application process by downloading and completing the LIEAP application (English or Spanish) at MeckNC.gov/energy.
