NEW YORK CITY — An elite Upper East Side all-boys school wants two families to pony up a combined $233,000 in "unpaid" tuition, according to court records. The Browning School this week separately filed breach of contract complaints in New York court against the parents of students. The families — who all reside on the Upper East Side within blocks of the private academy on East 62nd Street — failed to honor agreements to pay for their children's educations, the complaints contend. One family owes the most money, according to a complaint. Its children went to the school without any tuition being paid beyond a deposit, the complaint states. "Although the School billed Defendants and demanded payment, the balance of $148,790.00 remains unpaid and outstanding," the complaint states. The second family has $83,799.24 in unpaid tuition, which they still owe even after they withdrew their children from the school, the complaint contends. "It was not until August 13, 2020 that Defendants notified the School for the first time that they were going to withdraw their sons from the School," the complaint states. "Defendants agreed in August 2020 to pay the contractually agreed tuition but have failed to do so." Patch reached out to the parents for comment, but received no reply as of Thursday afternoon. The families names were witheld by Patch so as not to identify the children. The Browning School is no stranger to pursuing legal action against families over unpaid tuition, court records indicate. Complaints going back to 2014 show attorneys for the school pursued at least eight civil cases against families, according to court records.
