Man Charged With Impersonating Police Officer In Walker County

JASPER, AL — A man has been arrested and charged with impersonating a police officer in Walker County after the sheriff's office received complaints about a man reportedly stopping vehicles and claiming to be a police officer. Click here to subscribe to our free Tuscaloosa Daily newsletter and breaking news alerts Walker County Sheriff Nick Smith on on Wednesday that investigators followed up on the complaints and developed a suspect, who was contacted by deputies on Tuesday. Smith then said a 64-year-old man turned himself in to the sheriff's office Wednesday morning, where it was determined that he was presenting a Jefferson County Commission Card and badge issued to him in 1982 by former Jefferson County Sheriff Mel Bailey. The suspect is not a police officer, the sheriff said, and his name is being withheld while the investigation looks into other potential complaints.
