Description
Beeswax Encaustic Classes by Deborah Stachowic I am starting up a new series of classes in the Georgetown area of south Seattle. The studio is located at 6555 5th Avenue S, Seattle WA 98108, in the artist complex known as Equinox Studios. If you do not know what Encaustic painting is, it is an ancient technique that was practiced 2000 years ago by the Egyptian artists, for portraits on the mummy cases. It was almost a lost technique until the turn of the 20th century, when a book was written that included encaustic formulas. It has now seen a resurgence since the 1990's, Jasper Johns being the most famous practitioner. The medium is worked hot and includes beeswax, damar resin, and pigment. Collage with, paper, fabric, photos, coins, buttons, cardboard, pastels, oil sticks, metal foil, drawings, written word, there is no limit! You can carve, inscribe, and burn the surface. It is a very exciting process and after talking to many artists from other mediums, they inevitably get hooked by the encaustic bug! It is very approachable by total beginners, very fun to do with a friend, and the smell from the beeswax is intoxicating! Advanced painters also find it extremely versatile, as the wax acts as glue and you can add almost anything to the surface to create a very 3 dimensional piece of art. My studio is set up with the extensive venting which is needed. The classes will start in late April/ May. They run for 4 sessions, 12 hours of total instruction. The cost is $200 + $25 for materials. Most students go home with 3-4 finished pieces ready to hang. The classes are limited to 6 persons. If you have to miss a class we can figure out a way for you to make it up. Mondays April 18th-May 9th 6:30 - 9:30 pm Tuesdays April 19th-May 10th 6:30 - 9:30 pm Wednesdays April 20th-May 11th 6:30 - 9:30 pm I will also be offering Saturday sessions for 6 hours of instruction for $100 +$13 for materials 9am - 4 pm, 1 hour lunch. April 23rd, 30th, May 7th, 14th I will be relocating and retiring to Italy at the end of 2022, in order to start an Art and Cultural Center in Umbria, Italy, where I will be teaching classes. So this year's classes will be the last time you will get to study with me in the states. If you are interested in registering or want more info, you can email me and include your phone # so that I can call you or text you.
