Description

Tired of being weeded and the stress involved with it, join us to find balance with your mental health. The restaurant and hospitality industries are high-paced and high-stressed, which leads it to having some of the highest rates of mental illness and substance abuse than most in any field. These industries experience increasing rates of drug use, mental health issues and harassment and for most poor quality of life. How can we help start the conversation with those who we work with each day in these fields and help direct them to alternative options as a safe space and outlet for them? Join us for an afternoon of hands-on de-stressing techniques lead by local professionals in the fields of music therapy, art therapy, yoga and emotional counseling. The event will be followed by a Jack Daniel's happy hour. The day's event will take place at Cioppino's in the strip district. Meet the presenters: Michael Baranski, PhD: I am an Assistant Professor of Psychology at California University of Pennsylvania. I earned my Ph.D. at Kent State University in Ohio, where I researched the cognitive benefits of mindfulness meditation. Specifically, I examined if the development of non-judgmental, present-moment awareness could improve working memory and executive functions, especially for those prone to mind-wandering or trait anxiety. I am currently preparing a manuscript regarding research on the educational benefits of mindfulness meditation, as well as collecting data for a multi-site, international study investigating how brief mindfulness practices may reduce stress. At Cal U, I teach Cognitive Psychology, Senior Seminar: The Empirical Study of Mindfulness Meditation, Descriptive and Inferential Statistics, Educational Psychology, Psychology of Stress Management, General Psychology, and Psychological Measurement Lab. Outside of work, I enjoy exercising, meditating, podcasts, and reading. Most of all, I enjoy spending time with my wife Allison and our two amazing sons, Kallen and Maddox. Kristen F. Schaffner, PhD, NCSP I am an Assistant Professor of Psychology and School Psychology at California University of Pennsylvania. Clinically, my areas of focus include early childhood and supporting caregivers, disruptive behavior disorders, childhood trauma, consultation/collaboration as well as community implementation of evidence-based treatments. My research interest focus how we can help get treatments that really work to families who really need them and how to best train practitioners. I am also a lover of coffee, runner, poetry writer, and avid concert goer. My greatest joy is spending time with my husband and three boys, Garon, Ethan, & Julian.
