FREEHOLD, NJ — The Freehold Borough and Freehold Township school districts are closing their respective schools for two weeks starting Monday due to concerns over the spread of the coronavirus. There have been seven cases of COVID-19 identified in Monmouth County as of Friday, according to state health department officials. Freehold Borough Superintendent Rocco Tomazic said the schools will be closed Monday and virtual learning will begin Tuesday. The district will be closed through March 27, and officials will reevaluate at that time. More detailed information will be distributed to parents and guardians, he said. Freehold Township Superintendent Neal Dickstein said his district will close Monday as well, and schools will reopen March 30. Information on the district's virtual learning is on its website. It includes information on how to retrieve your child's password to access the various learning systems. COVID-19 is caused by a member of the coronavirus family that's a close cousin to the SARS and MERS viruses that have caused outbreaks in the past.
