Description

NYSID's Arthur K. Satz Lecture focuses on the intersection of design and the humanities. Presenting on March 28th at 6PM, Satz Auditorium Sam Lubell is the Executive Editor of Metropolis Magazine. He has written more than ten books about architecture for Phaidon, Rizzoli, The Monacelli Press, Metropolis Books, and Oro Editions. He has written for The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, Architectural Digest, Wallpaper, Dwell, Metropolis, National Geographic, The Atlantic, The Architect’s Newspaper, Architect Magazine, and other publications. His lecture, "Learning From Broadway", will highlight the book Drama, which Mr. Lubell created together with architect David Rockwell and designer Bruce Mau. Using examples from both inside and outside of Rockwell Group’s portfolio, Drama explores the firm’s design approach at the intersection of architecture and theater. The book devotes chapters to fundamental concepts of theater—including Audience, Ensemble, Worlds, Story, Journey, and Impermanence—and how they can apply to design of all types and scales. The talk will also shed light on the process of creating the book, and examine how designers can work across disciplines and effectively disseminate their own work and creative processes. Lubell co-curated the exhibitions Never Built New York, at the Queens Museum; Never Built Los Angeles at the A+D Architecture and Design Museum, Los Angeles; Shelter: Rethinking How We Live in Los Angeles, at the A+D Architecture and Design Museum, Los Angeles; and Sacred Spaces, a traveling exhibition with the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation. He has taught as an adjunct professor at Syracuse University School of Architecture and Columbia University GSAPP.
