UPPER ST. CLAIR, PA - The coronavirus outbreak is scuttling a 40-year tradition in the township. Upper St. Clair Community Day, scheduled for May 16, has been canceled.
Community Day is an annual, collaborative effort between the the township, Upper St. Clair School District, the township Volunteer Frie Department, Tr-Community South EMS, community groups and local businesses.
"The decision is not taken lightly," township manager Matthew R. Serakowski said in a release. "We made this decision out of concern for the safety and health of our community due to the COVID-19 pandemic."
Upper St. Clair's Community Day 2020 was to include a fun run-walk, a parade, community game and food booths and more.
"We thank all the organizers and volunteers who have already put so much work into planning this year's event," school district superintendent John Rozzo said. "All those efforts will be used to make next year's Community Day even better."
Previous Community Days have proceeded despite heavy rain, extreme heat and snow flurries. flurries. This year marks the first Community Day cancellation since its debut on May 20, 1978.
